From the Web of All Things:
Xenophenes said
The Ethiops say that their gods are flat-nosed and black while the Thracians say that theirs have blue eyes and red hair. Yet if cattle or horses or lions had hands and could draw and could sculpture like men, then horses would draw their gods like horses, and cattle like cattle, and each would then shape bodies of gods in the likeness, each kind of its own.
"...and again, talking about proving things, the same old Greek said,
... as for certain truth, no man has known it. Nor shall he know it, neither of the gods nor yet of all the things of which I speak. For even if by chance he were to utter the final Truth, he would, himself, not know it for all is but a woven web of guesses.

I know, I posted this earlier, but can't find it, so I'm putting it here, I like it so much. The Thracians lived in today's Russia or Ukraine, I believe. Famous for their gold jewelry and inventing the stirrup for the horses they broke on the plains. Magnificent cowboys and horseback fighters, standing in their stirrups, snapping away their arrows, drilling holes in their enemies.
Those were fragments that have come down to us. If X were here today, he'd probably be blogging...
